    Major Duties:
    Responds to alarms, combats fire, and rescues personnel requiring the full performance of fire fighting tasks involving structures, equipment, facilities, crashed and burning aircraft, fuel, hazardous materials and brush fires. Responds to crash alert standbys; crash, fire, and rescue incidents; brush, forest and structural fires, hazardous material spills & releases and accomplishes containment and decontamination; confined space/heavy technical rescue; fuel spill containment in waterways. Alternates as hose-man, ladder-man, hydrant-man, rescue-man, nozzle-man, and salvage-man or hand lineman. Conducts fire prevention inspections. Operates and maintains care of a variety of lifesaving and rescue equipment including ambulance equipment, two way radio equipment, telemetry equipment, cardiac monitors, specialized kits and bags, backboards, suction devices, monitors, splints, oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers. Operates emergency vehicles.

    General Schedule

  • A well-developed working knowledge of topographic anatomy; night/left side, surface proximal, distal, medial, superior, inferior, to accurately transmit the location of injury or illness. Knowledge of communication equipment and related requirements for dispatching manpower and equipment. Knowledge in application of administration of drugs as per local protocols, Operational Medical Director’s instruction. Knowledge of the location of fire reporting systems, hydrants, utility shutoffs, sprinkler valves, streets, and buildings. Knowledge of fire fighting techniques associated with structures and grounds, including shops, offices, warehouses, barracks, aircraft, and hazardous materials. Knowledge of the characteristics of special extinguishing agents and operational capabilities of extinguishing equipment. Practical knowledge of hydraulic principles as they pertain to water flow, friction loss, etc.Pre-Employment Certification Requirements: Firefighter I Firefighter II Hazardous Materials – Awareness Hazardous Materials – Operations Virginia Emergency Medical Technician – Cardiac, Intermediate or Higher. If National Registry EMT, employee will be required to obtain Virginia State certification within three months of assignment.

    Is required to pass the annual firefighters physical.

    Inclement Weather Essential Position. Is subject to recall after normal tour in cases of emergencies. Normal tour of duty is seventy-two (72) hours per week.

    Post-Employment Certification Requirements: Virginia Emergency Medical Technician Instructor – Employee will be required to obtain certification within two years of assignment.     Typical Qualifications:

    Certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia (VA EMT- Intermediate), Emergency Vehicle Operator II (EVOC II), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Virginia Department of Fire Programs Firefighter II (VA DFP Firefighter II), and in hazardous materials (HAZMAT) operations. Must have considerable experience in emergency services, high school diploma or GED, and driver’s license valid in Virginia.

    Physical Requirements:
    Requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force regularly and exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; additional physical requirements available upon request and will be presented during the hiring process.

    Supplemental Information:

    Candidates are placed on an eligibility list based on results of a written examination and physical agility test. Top candidates from this eligibility list are then selected based on the results of a panel interview, background investigation, polygraph test, and pre-employment physical examination.

    Virginia Beach EMS Brigade Chief

    The City of Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) seeks an experienced individual to serve as an EMS Brigade Chief. This individual will manage and direct the delivery of skilled emergency and non-emergency services in a variety of areas including: emergency medical and rescue operations, advanced medical assistance, mentoring, training, public education, volunteer agency administration and coordination, disaster management, and other duties as required. An EMS Brigade Chief typically commands an EMS brigade consisting of multiple stations, medic groups and/or specialty teams and is responsible for all personnel, equipment, apparatus, and facilities under their direction. Brigade Chiefs often function as Duty Shift Commanders and as such oversee all on duty EMS resources, including twelve or more staffed ambulances, zone cars, squad trucks, and special response vehicles. Individual will also engage in the direct provision of advanced life support pre-hospital patient care at the EMT-Paramedic level as needed.

    This position is classified as FLSA Exempt and will average a 60 hour work week to accommodate nights, weekends and holidays as assigned and is considered ALPHA-1. Starting Salary: $54,920.64.
