JOB DESCRIPTION

The Loudoun County, VA, Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management will establish an eligibility pool for the position of Fire Fighter/EMT to fill regular, full-time position vacancies. Through Loudoun County’s high performance combination career-volunteer system, the Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management provides skilled emergency and non-emergency related services including: fire suppression, basic and advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, technical rescue operations, public education and information, and related duties while promoting core values that include Teamwork, Integrity, Professionalism and Service. We are especially seeking Advanced Life Support (ALS) Providers. ALS certified providers become eligible for a base pay increase once locally authorized. All candidates will be required to successfully complete a Fire-Rescue Recruit School before being assigned to a county fire and rescue Station. The written test portion of the process will be administered on October 9th and 10th of 2009. Once we receive your application, you will be scheduled on a first come basis as to which date to test.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma/G.E.D. Requires valid Divers License and age 18 or older at time of application. As part of the selection process, applicants may be disqualified for use of drugs, certain driving violations, or other factors based on selection criteria. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Preferences will be given to those candidates possessing one or more of the following: VA EMT-I, VA EMT-P, or National Registry EMT-Intermediate/Paramedic, Loudoun County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Experience and/or Military Experience. To be considered, applicants must submit a County of Loudoun Application electronically.
POST CONDITIONAL OFFER CONTINGENCIES

Selection process: Candidates must successfully pass a Comprehensive Written Examination, Physical Ability Test, Polygraph Examination, Background Check/ Personal History Review, NFPA 1582 Medical Examination/Substance Abuse Screening, and an in person interview to be placed in the eligibility pool. The eligibility pool will stay on file for at least nine months.

Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED; must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application; graduation from an approved fire academy or a Virginia state certified cardiac technician or paramedic preferred. Requires the successful completion of the Fire & Rescue application process: these elements include producing all required documentation, passing an initial physical agility test, meeting the Fire and Rescue Division’s criteria for a satisfactory driving record, meeting the required medical standards provided by the City by a licensed physician (applicants must possess no physical defects which would render the incumbent unfit to perform all the duties of a firefighter/emergency medical technician); successfully completing a background investigation and a polygraph examination; successfully completing any required interviews and successfully completing a written examination. Upon hire, applicants must agree to conditions of employment as specified by the Fire & Rescue Division and must successfully complete Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course and Pump Operator course. This position requires the ability to be courteous yet firm with the public; ability to communicate effectively and coherently over radios and other types of communication equipment; ability to prepare written documents and reports such as special reports, accident or investigation reports, etc.; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to operate equipment and machines such as fire and emergency response equipment and two-way communication equipment; ability to use personal computers for job specific applications; ability to communicate general information regarding laws, ordinances, and regulations to the public; ability to communicate effectively with others by giving information and directions; ability to interact positively with members of the community and maintain harmonious working relationships with diverse groups; good skills of observation and memory. Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Virginia and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria. Any person offered employment in this position must successfully complete pre-employment testing for controlled substances and will be subject to random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.
