COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

The County of Orange Virginia has an opening for a part-time 911 Communications Officer.  Duties for the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Receives emergency requests for service by radio and telephone and determines appropriate responses according to the location, nature of the problem, and procedures of the department;
  • Receives non-emergency calls for service and provides information accordingly;
  • Operate and monitor multiple emergency radio frequencies;
  • Operates computer systems;
  • Maintains communications with responding emergency units to assist them in any manner necessary to complete proper response;
  • Document and record requests for service, tracks response and disposition of calls;
  • Notifies Virginia Department of Transportation of road hazards, including fallen trees, high water, snow, ice, etc.  Notifies power, telephone, and cable companies of down lines.  Notifies rail companies of blocked tracks or malfunctioning arm guards;
  • Answers telephone; receives inquires and provides information or refers inquiries/messages to the appropriate personnel, department, or agency;
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area;
  • Should possess Basic Dispatcher State Certification, First Aid and CPR certifications.  If not certified, on the job training will be provided until certification is acquired.  Certifications must be obtained within one year from employment date;
  • Requires working rotating shifts, days, night, weekends, holidays, and during severe weather;
  • Position requires a high school diploma or GED;
  • Must have a clear speaking voice;
  • Must possess the ability to remain calm under stressful situation with instant decision-making abilities;
  • Salary range $13.82 – $17.97

This new full-time position will develop, standardize and coordinate implementation of all aspects of fire operations and tactics, emergency medical services, and professional development curriculum for a growing and dynamic career and volunteer fire and rescue service.

Duties: Work includes but is not limited to: design and development of course curriculum for recruit school, in service training and advanced life support training. This may consist of test development, scoring and statistical validation, lesson plan design, analysis and evaluation, coordination, management, maintenance and appropriate dissemination of Academy training records. Other duties may include conducting internal audits and inspections of the basic training curriculum to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local Fire and Rescue mandates. Organizing and maintaining extensive documentation and records to include word processing systems and information storage and retrieval. Incumbent must have the ability to prepare comprehensive reports ensuring factual and statistical accuracy. Research, develop and construct examinations for recruit training, in service training and advanced life support training. Have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with subordinates, peers, supervisors and members of the general public.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of in conducting and implementing advanced life support and professional development training programs and instruction techniques; Through knowledge of curriculum development and design, needs assessment, test construction, development and validation, and program evaluation techniques; Ability to organize and maintain extensive documentation and records to include word processing systems and information storage and retrieval; Ability to prepare comprehensive reports ensuring factual and statistical accuracy while adhering to all state objectives and deadlines; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or closely related field; and 2-3 years of experience in training course and curriculum design and development and program evaluation methodologies; and 1-2 years of supervisory experience at a professional level. A background in Fire Services and Emergency Medical Service training.

Preferences: Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal Fire and EMS Training guidelines and requirements. This includes knowledge and understanding of NFPA, Virginia Dept. of Fire Programs and Office of Emergency Medical Services and guidelines. The candidate will be a key participant in the accreditation process that is conducted by various agencies as related to the Prince William Fire and Rescue service.

The City of Portsmouth seeks an individual who under general supervision, provides skilled and technical training to the Portsmouth Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (PFRES) employees. Employee is responsible for maintaining a pre-hospital emergency care Continuing Education program in accordance with the PFRES policies and procedures. The incumbent will be responsible for EMS personnel training, continuing medical education and skills maintenance, certification/recertification programs, quality improvement studies, and records management. Work is usually performed independently within established practices and procedures.
Education/Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by paramedic courses required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Special Req: Certification by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic as outlined in 12 VAC 5-31. The Campbell County Department of Public Safety is seeking a motivated, customer service oriented and outgoing person to fill the role of a full time volunteer fire and EMS Recruitment and Retention Coordinator. Applicants should have experience in public relations and/or marketing and in working with volunteers and must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications. The ideal candidate should have an Associates Degree and experience in emergency medical services (EMS) and volunteer rescue squads. This position requires schedule flexibility, honesty, integrity and the ability to work well with the County’s Fire and EMS volunteers.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screening, DMV record check, and criminal history background check.

Starting Salary Range: Dependent upon qualifications and/or experience.
