The Department of Emergency Services has an opening for a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator to perform intermediate technical work in the area of emergency services communications, receiving public complaints and calls for service and dispatching emergency management, police, fire and EMS personnel and equipment usually in response to emergency situations; monitors and handles; operates computer terminals containing criminal histories and wanted files on Federal and State levels; monitors and relays broadcast from federal and state warning systems. Education and experience equivalent to a graduation from high school and experience in using computers and communications equipment; general knowledge of geography of the City; Must complete the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch Emergency Telecommunicators course and Emergency Medical Dispatch course, CPR, State basic Criminal Justice Telecommunicators Course, and VCIN/NCIC Operator course within one year of employment.

Job Description
Dispatches police, fire, rescue and public works equipment and personnel usually in response to emergency situations and disseminates information to the general public and emergency services. Receives and disseminates information thru the use of computers linked to the Virginia Criminal Information Network. Employees are hired in a “trainee” capacity with promotion after one year. Fast-paced environment where attention to detail and the ability to multitask are a must. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferably supplemented with some work experience with Police and/or Fire and Rescue; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must become certified to operate the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Must pass police security clearance. Bilingual, Spanish/English speakers encouraged to apply. THIS POSITION REQUIRES ROTATING SHIFTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.
